Magnolia Optical Technologies, Inc. has been focusing on several technology thrust areas. Magnolia covers a broad range of optical technologies from below 0.3 microns to greater than 12 microns.

Infrared Materials & Detector Technology
The company has been working on innovations in Infrared detectors using thin film and nanotechnology. We have significant competency in materials and device modeling for thin film and nanostructured infrared detectors. Currently single and multispectral designs are being studied for photon and thermal detectors. Our experience spans from conventional Mercury Cadmium Telluride, Indium Gallium Arsenide, Indium Antimonide to more novel Carbon Nanotube based bolometers.

Anti-Reflection Coating Technology
Magnolia Optical Technologies, Inc. in collaboration with the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, MD has been developing broad band radiation hard multi-layer anti-reflection (AR) coatings that can be used for visible and IR sensors applications including enhancing solar cell performance. These sensors and solar cells are needed for space and terrestrial applications and can operate in space environment without any degradation.

To optimize the multicolor sensor performance, minimize the reflection losses, and achieve significant reduction in the effects of solarization in space, innovative anti-reflection coatings are needed to enhance the performance of the detector / focal plane arrays. A combination of innovative materials offers the potential of developing radiation hardened anti-reflection coatings with high optical quality with controlled physical properties.

Magnolia has also developed models that allow optimization of these antireflection coatings across a broadband of interest, which should significantly improve the multicolor sensor performance. These coatings can be implemented on a variety of materials, such as, silicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, gallium nitride, and cadmium telluride for ultraviolet, visible and infrared applications, including high quality solar cells for commercial and defense applications.

Solar Cell Technology
Magnolia has been working on new solar cell design to achieve high performance photo-voltaics. The company has revolutionary approaches to Indium Nnitride (InN) and Zinc Oxide (ZnO)-based quantum dot and quantum wire solar cell technology. These advanced solar cell nanostructures can harness a very large fraction of the solar spectrum while minimizing the effects of high temperatures and high-energy radiation. This technology will enable photovoltaic power systems of future NASA space exploration missions

High Speed VCSELs Technology
Magnolia has been developing the first 120 Gb/s fiber-optic transmitter and receiver modules. These modules feature 12 parallel channels, each operating at 10 Gb/s. The transmitter module uses 850 nm vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) sources while the receiver element features a PIN diode array.
